PAPER STAGE DESIGN FOR MANNOJO NOMURA - Tokyo, Japan, 1997

紙の舞台装置

They asked to design the stage sets for a combined performance of both Japanese and Chinese drama at the Kabuki-za Theater. Recycled paper-tube stage sets were designed for each of the acts as well as the intermissions. During the Japanese ‘Kyogen’, 4 paper tubes were to create an impression of ‘ma’, a uniquely Japanese sense of space and time. For the Beijing Opera the tubes were used to create an impression of expansiveness. During the intervals by utilizing the turntable the paper tubes, describing a wide arc, were made to appear from behind a curtain. Light and shadow were used in the final scene to create a space which brought to mind a world on a vast scale which brought to mind a world on a vast scale. Finally, as the curtain rose for the last time the stage rotated, enclosing the performers within a vast space. By using the turntable, battens curtains and lighting, simply by changing the positions of the paper tubes it was possible to create a stage set on a large scale.
